What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian national scheme for people who have permanent and significant disability with funding for supports and services. It provides funding to eligible people so they gain more time with family and friends, greater independence, access to new skills, jobs, and an improved quality of life.
The NDIS supports over 500,000 Australians with disability to access the services and supports based on their individual needs. This includes supporting approximately 80,000 children.
What types of supports the NDIS may fund for participants:
- daily personal activities and household tasks
- transport to enable participation in community, social, economic and daily life activities
- workplace help to allow a participant to successfully get or keep employment in the open or supported labour market
- therapeutic supports including behaviour support
- home modification design and construction
- mobility equipment and vehicle modifications, and
- help fund everyday consumable products under the Core Support budget.
What is the NDIS consumables budget?
NDIS Consumables fall under the Core Supports NDIS budget, which is intended to help you fund everyday items and activities that are ‘reasonable and necessary’. The Consumable products and devices that you might need for your support needs may include continence and wound care products, urology and nutrition items, and specific products for children and baby.
