Choose the Right Catheter

The right catheter depends on the person's diagnosis, mobility, and whether it will be self-managed or carer-assisted. Intermittent catheters are inserted to empty the bladder and removed immediately after, preferred for ongoing bladder management as they carry a lower infection risk. Indwelling (Foley) catheters remain in place and drain continuously, typically used when regular self-catheterisation is not practical.

Sizing is measured in French (Fr) gauge with the smallest appropriate size is generally recommended to minimise discomfort. For a detailed comparison of both types, read our guide on indwelling vs intermittent catheters.

For catheters already in use, browse compatible drainage bags and catheter accessories to complete the care setup.

FAQs

A 2-way catheter has one channel for drainage and one for the balloon. A 3-way catheter has an additional channel for irrigation, typically used after bladder surgery or when continuous flushing is needed

ntermittent catheters are commonly self-managed at home following training from a healthcare professional. Indwelling catheters may require more regular clinical oversight for monitoring and scheduled changes.

Catheters may be claimable as consumables under NDIS funding when included in your plan. Visit our NDIS page to learn more about eligibility.

Some catheters come pre-lubricated or hydrophilic-coated. For uncoated catheters, a separate lubricating gel is typically required, always following the instructions provided with the product.
